Design Principles
The design principles of the DECM are based upon:
- Simplicity
- Reliability
- Maintainability, and
- Survivability
Simplicity
The simplicity of the Trident Energy solution is based around the fact that the system has only one moving part – float ⁄ linear generator translator, which is powered by the motion of floats placed in the sea. As waves pass through the wavefarm, so the floats rise and fall. This causes relative motion between the two components of the linear generator (the translator and stator) and electricity is immediately generated. There is absolutely no contact between the two parts of the generator as the energy conversion is entirely electromagnetic.
Reliability
The Trident Energy solution is based on established and proven engineering concepts. There is no aspect of the technology that requires unusual, or as yet, unavailable or untested components.
Unlike some competitor solutions the DECM is able to use the full spectrum of wave heights, wavelengths and wave directions.
A commercial wave farm will use tens, hundreds or possibly thousands of independent linear generators, depending on the required output capacity. Because the overall motion of the floats is random, continuous power is generated. A wave farm with a footprint of just 1 square kilometer will be capable of generating 100MW in good wave conditions.
Maintainability
One of the main advantages of the Trident Energy solution is the fact that it is a low maintenance system. The only moving part is the float ⁄ girder combination, which conveys the thrust imparted by the wave up to the generating chamber. Consequently, maintenance is confined purely to the servicing of the tube guide rollers and occasional float repair. In addition maintenance of individual generators does not require the shut down of the entire system. Repairs can be carried out on individual generator basis, independent of system operation.
Survivability
Key to the viability of any sea wave energy conversion system is its ability to survive storms and violent wave conditions. Trident Energy’s technology has a unique and patented self-protection mechanism, which automatically retracts the floats from the sea in storm conditions storing them in protective chambers above the water line. This is done by switching the generators into motor mode and operating the machinery in reverse. Our solution is the only known system with a self-protection capability. Patents have been granted internationally.
